Effie Hegermann Lindencrone

"Effie Hegermann Lindencrone (Frederikke Nikoline Octavia) was born *27.8.1860 in Hillerød, died 17.12.1945 in Frederigsborg.

Her parents were Colonel Diderik William H.-L. (1817-85) and Amalie Wilhelmine Sehested (1831-1928).

She worked and lived togehter with Fanny Susanne Garde and shared also the same unique numbering system with her.

Effie Hegermann was trained at the Art School for Women 1880-85, later Drawing and Art Industrial School for Women, among others with Pietro Krohn as a teacher. At school she met Fanny Garde, who over the years she developed a very close cooperation with, later also co-housing. Together they began in 1885 to deal with ceramics by G. Eifrig on Copenhagen´s Lervarefabrik in Valby. In 1886 they were called to Bing & Grondahl Porcelain Factory to perform underglaze paint on Heron frame, 1888. Then they were permanently attached to the factory where they shared a studio. It was at that time uncommon that women worked in a factory, even as porcelain painters, the work was usually performed by men. The set was a world success, and it was featured on The Nordic Industry, Agriculture and Art Exhibition in Copenhagen. 1888, at the world exhibitions in Paris in 1889 and 1900. Effie Hegermann Lincencrone quickly developed a ceramic talent, and she performed significant independent work. Probably under the influence of the painter J.F. Willumsen, who was working for the factory 1897-1900, she changed her style in a more plastic-decorative direction. She performed plant motifs as unique items that were manufactured in openwork, underglaze painted porcelain after detailed sketches based on nature studies, including Vase with frogs, mushrooms and plants, 1898. Vase forms were penetrated by cuts in porcelain, a technique she used to breaking point. At the beginning of the century, she began to work with a pure sculptural form, where she cut ceramic material. The subjects were especially seaweed, aquatic plants, birds and fish.

In 1907 Effie Hegermann became board member of Drawing and Art Industrial School for Women. At the World Exhibition in Paris in 1925, she received the Diplôme d'honneur for a collection of freely modeled porcelain sculptures, which were bought by several foreign industrial art museums. Over the years, she participated in Bing & Grondahl exhibitions at home and abroad, at "Dänische Ausstellung", Berlin 1910-11, Women Artists retrospective exhibition in 1920 and the Danish National Exhibition, New York 1927. In the 1980s and 1990s, several of her work has been shown at exhibitions at home and abroad.

Technically and artistically Effie Hegermann developed constantly and was inspired by her collaboration and his travels with Fanny Garde, including to Italy in 1904 and 1910. She kept the enthusiasm and interest in her art throughout her life and continued experiments with new glazes, despite the fact that her last year of life was tragic. During the bombing of the French school of Frederiksberg. in 1944 her apartment on Maglekildevej was hit, and she lost all her possessions."

The Fifty Shades of Effie

This collection attempts to fully map the artistic life of Effie Hegermann Lindencrone. Her development from decorating the Heron service to simple unique underglaze pieces towards a relief type of vases and items that later on peaked in highly pierced and carved pieces is presented. Items all over her 50 years at Bing&Gröndahl are shown here. In her later years she turned to more relief type and also crackle glaze items. Here achievements must be rated as extremely outstanding taking into account that a women´s career in artistic professions were extremely uncommon at that time.
